Yesterday (on January 17, 2011), CloudFlare, one of the leading providers of Content Delivery Networks and web security features, announced the launch of its tool, a Stop Censorship bookmarklet, which can be used by various website owners irrespective of their being a CloudFlare customer or not to protest against SOPA.
The House of Representatives are currently considering the SOPA or Stop Online Piracy Act, and various websites including Reddit, Boing Boing and Wikipedia amongst others are planning to black out their websites today, i.e. January 18, 2012. To support the cause, CloudFlare’s Stop Censorship App will allow site owners to protest against the law by blacking out all words longer than five characters on their website and adding a “Censored” corner badge on the top of the web-pages. This will be visible to visitors only on their first visit, thus it will not hamper the productivity while allowing owners to show disapproval.
For CloudFlare customers, the app can be enabled from their apps panel, and the others can grab an embed code from http://mikesofaer.github.com/stop_censorship. CloudFlare mentioned that its app was written in a way that it would not hamper the Search Engine rankings of the websites and the Company will support its application for a month.

This Wednesday (on December 14, 2011), Level 3 Communications, the leading international provider of fiber-based communication services, announced that it had extended its MyLevel3 customer portal to include self-generating service quotes thus allowing its resellers and wholesale customers the capabilities to obtain quotes by mixing and matching various Level 3 offerings.
Till now, while the portal provided a central view of how the services were performing, the customers still needed to get back to Level 3 in case they wanted quotes by combining multiple offerings and thus account management was not stream-lined. The addition of the enhanced quoting functionality will now allow customers to automatically create both pricing information and invoices for a variety of services at runtime, and the customers can also tag and save the quotes in various ways to easily automate the complete billing process.
Level 3 mentioned that its portal was an integral component of its customer satisfaction and the Company would thus keep improving the portal to make it more user-friendly and intuitive to empower their customers and continuously improve their experience.

Most website owners are concerned about the stability and the uptime of their websites. While the hosting services say there is almost no downtime, the website owners need some tools to check the uptime of their sites and Pingdom is one such tool, which periodically checks the website status and updates the owners if the site goes down or there is some issue.
Since July 2009, Pingdom also started the Pingdom Free Service, which is aimed at providing the checks to hobbyists or blog-owners to validate the status of their pages and servers. The following are the features of Pingdom Free.
- One website/server can be added for monitoring.
- Variable frequency of checking whether the site is up. Options include different frequencies from once every minute to once every hour.
- Various customizable uptime statistics and reports.
- Unlimited number of emails to warn the owners when the site goes down.
- Apart from this, the Pingdom Free service also gives the owners a onetime free 20 SMS alerts, which send text messages to the provided cell phone when the website goes down. Once the 20 are expired, the users can opt to buy more sms if needed.
- The uptime reports also show the site performance in different parts of the world and this feature is useful for hosting services which use CDN for improved performance. It also helps CDN companies to keep track of, and optimize their networks based on load.
All in all, with various useful services and absolutely no cost involved, the Pingdom Free is positively recommended for hobbyist web-owners or bloggers.
