Akamai Launches Kona Site Defender Offering

Yesterday (on February 21, 2012), Akamai Technologies, one of the most leading providers of cloud-based web optimization and security offerings, announced the launch of the Akamai Kona Site Defender, which is a service designed to protecting enterprise websites from various threats and protect their applications and transactions from an array of attacks. The Kona Site Defender makes use of the Akamai global network to provide immense scalability and protection against attacks like DDoS, TCP SYN floods, UDP floods and other network layer attacks. Apart from this, the solution provides various configuration rules to protect against HTTP protocol violations, limit HTTP request and policy limits and protection against SQL injections, cross site scripting and other application layer attacks. The system also comes with a web application firewall and analytic information to allow organizations in gauging and protecting their content better. Akamai mentioned that it has seen a huge burst in online attacks, and the Kona Site Defender is aimed to protect its customers against these attacks. The solution is currently in limited availability and will be made available to general public from April 11, 2012.

Akamai Technologies Acquires Blaze Software Inc.

Last Wednesday (on February 8, 2012), Akamai Technologies, the global leader in web optimization and Content Delivery Network services, announced that it had acquired Blaze Software Inc., one of the innovative providers of cloud-based services that automate frontend optimization (FEO) and optimizes the speed of rendering web pages, in a cash transaction. With the Internet applications becoming more complex, and with the higher use of rich media on the webpages, there is a need to have solutions that optimize the content when it is being delivered to devices including desktops, laptops, tablet devices and smart phones. And by reducing the number of requests, and optimizing the content, the offering of Blaze provides this additional performance improvements. Akamai mentioned that since the solution was supplementary to its global cloud, leveraging and integrating this technology would enable Akamai to provide additional performance improvements to its customers. Both Akamai and Blaze were happy with development and at the prospect of working together, and while it was a cash-only deal, the financial details of the same were not disclosed.

Akamai Releases State of the Internet Report for Q3, 2011

Last Tuesday (on January 31, 2012), Akamai Technologies, the global leader in Content Delivery Network and web-optimization solutions, announced the State of the Internet Report that includes the data of Q3, 2011 to provide the latest statistics and information about the world-wide-web on basis of the data collated by Akamai’s Intelligent platform. Among the various highlights included the almost 20-times increase in the number of DDoS attacks, which are now much more sophisticated and executed with higher intensity. There was an increase in the number of attacks recorded from the Asia and Australia region, and the attacks targeted Ports 23 (Telnet) and 445 much more as compared to the Port 80 (HTTP). Among the other aspects included the records of how much IPv4 is being replaced by IPv6 and the increasing speeds of mobile connections. As for the Internet speeds, South Korea continues to head the speeds, but there are now 23 US cities in the list of Top #100. Since a huge amount of Internet traffic goes through Akamai’s network, the findings of this report do provide a good sample about the direction in which Internet is progressing. Mark Vargo Named Akamai’s Senior VP for EMEA Region

This Wednesday (on January 25, 2012), Akamai, the leading cloud platform and content delivery network services provider, announced that it had selected Mark J. Vargo as the Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMEA. In this role, Mark Vargo will report to Robert Hughes, Akamai’s Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing and will lead all Akamai’s operations in EMEA. Mark will be based in Zurich and comes with more than 25 years of executive leadership experience from places including IBM, IDC, GiantLoop Networks and others. In his stint at IBM, Mark designed and launched various cloud and storage initiatives in the EMEA region, and was also one of the founding members of the EMC Corporation in EMEA. Mark had been working as the Chief Strategy Officer for IBM since 2006, and Akamai mentioned that they were happy to get him aboard since the Company was looking at expanding aggressively in the pan-EMEA region. At his end, Mark mentioned that he was happy to be selected by Akamai, and that he looked forward to expand Akamai’s services and offerings further in the EMEA.

IPv6 Gets Support from Akamai and Limelight Networks

Today (on January 17, 2012), Akamai and Limelight Networks, two of the leading providers of Content Delivery Network solutions and web optimization services, announced that they along with various other web Companies and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are collaborating together to roll out their products to IPv6 permanently by June 6, 2012. With more and more devices getting connected, the existing IPv4 had reached the limit of maximum available options, and hence the IPv6 roll out was extremely needed. Last year, on June 8, 2011, many of these Companies held a successful one-day IPv6 day, wherein traffic was routed to the IPv6 version of the web. The list of ISPs include AT & T, Comcast, Internode and Time Warner among many others. Leading network hardware providers Cisco and D-Link pledged their support and the major websites of Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Bing all have decided to move to IPv6 permanently from June 6, 2012. Various other hosting and CDN providers are also mentioning that they will also migrate their customer websites and data to IPv6, by enabling the same throughout their infrastructure.

Akamai Expands and Enhances Intelligent Network Portfolio

Today (on January 9, 2012), Akamai Technologies, the global leader in Content Delivery Networks and cloud-based web optimization solutions, announced that it is expanding and enhancing its intelligent platform to better meet the growing needs of the expanding online entertainment industry and providing them with support for models like Ultraviolet. Akamai mentioned that it had standardized HTTP as the primary delivery protocol for its HD Network, thus ensuring that its clients can make the most of Adobe’s HTTP Dynamic Streaming Capabilities for delivering their content. To ensure the security of its customers’ content, Akamai also developed Akamai SecureHD, which leverages token authorization, player verification and media encryption along with content targeting to ensure secure and protected content delivery. Apart from this, Akamai will also support business models like TV Everywhere and Ultraviolet by acting as an integration point between Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), technology providers, content creators and device makers that power Ultraviolet. Akamai is also helping in streamlining and better management of code, accounts and streams with the Ultraviolet Coordinator. These announcements were made by Akamai at the CES show in Las Vegas, and all the solutions are already made available to their customers.

Akamai Appoints Rachael Fitzpatrick as HR Director, Asia

Last Friday (on December 30, 2011), Akamai Technologies, the global leader in Content Delivery Networks and web optimization solutions, announced that it had appointed Rachael Fitzpatrick as the HR Director for its Asia Pacific operations. Rachael will be based in Singapore and will report to Linda Pettingell, senior HR director for Akamai. With her broad background in managing human resources across IT, insurance and shipping industries, the extremely talented Rachael Fitzpatrick brings with her immense experience, which will help the Company in properly merging the teams from Akamai’s Cotendo acquisition. Apart from this, the position is significant since it also reaffirms Akamai’s plans of increasing operations, especially related to cloud adoption and usage in the Asia Pacific region. Akamai’s management also mentioned that in her new role, Rachael will work closely with the Asia-Pacific-Japan management and the global HR team of Akamai to ensure high quality programs, work culture and best practices reach out to Akamai’s employees in the region.

Stock Prices of Akamai and Juniper Soar After the Former Acquires Cotendo

The stock prices of both Akamai Technologies, the global leader in Content Delivery Network solutions and Juniper networks, one of the leading providers of network optimization services and solutions went on an upward trajectory after Akamai announced that it had reached a definitive agreement of acquiring its Israeli competitor, Cotendo for 268 million USD. While the prices of Akamai improved because the acquisition of Cotendo would help it get new solutions and expand in newer markets, the same happened with Juniper because the later had been a strategic investor in Cotendo and was mentioned as one of its potential buyers, thus the Akamai acquisition was bound to bring in fresh cash supplies to Juniper. Apart from this, the acquisition may also open doors for potential future of various collaborations and technology partnership possibilities. Akamai’s price jumped from its $26-27 range to cross $30 and settled at $31.93 on Friday’s closing market, whereas Juniper networks rose from its Thursday’s closing price of about $ 19.40 to settle at $ 20.83 on Friday.

Akamai Confirms Plans of Acquiring Cotendo

Today (on December 22, 2011), Akamai Technologies, the global leader in Content Delivery Networks and web optimization solutions, and Cotendo, one of the leading and most innovative Content Delivery Network Companies, announced that the two Companies have signed a definitive agreement regarding Akamai’s acquisition of Cotendo. Both Akamai and Cotendo are working with various optimization solutions for faster delivery of content on the Internet, cloud and mobile networks, and the combination of the technical expertise of the teams as well as the global infrastructure, the innovation in these areas is expected to happen faster. The two Companies also have various patents and innovative solutions, which complement each other, thus providing better solutions to their combined customer-base. As per the current agreement and considering the stock price adjustments, Akamai will acquire all the stocks of Cotendo for about 268 million USD. Akamai and Cotendo both expressed their happiness for this development, and subject to the regulatory approvals and other closing formalities and paperwork, the acquisition is expected to be closed before June 2012.

Akamai Speeds up Content Delivery for BanifInvest

Yesterday (on December 7, 2011), Akamai Technologies, the leading provider of cloud platforms and Content Delivery Network solutions, announced that BanifInvest, one of the leading retail brokerage Companies in Brazil is using Akamai’s Brazilian distributor Exceda for speeding its website and thus improving the end-user experience for its customers. For maintaining a high QoS on its online brokerage portal, BanifInvest was looking for a fast and reliable service that would not only speed up its static assets, but also improve performance of its dynamic content, and this is where with its extremely reliable global network and Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator offering, Exceda proved to be a logical choice. The solution also enables BanifInvest’s clients to make their financial transactions in a secure and encrypted matter to maintain high level of security. Both Akamai and Exceda mentioned that they were happy to help improve the performance for BanifInvest, and they reported that using the solutions has increased the performance of the latter by almost 40 percent.
